Liliana Sanches Simões [1983] Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil

Visual artist, illustrator and printmaker. Her processes and poetics are connected to the emotional memory, evoking the recall of places, people and objects which sounds and silences are depicted in engravings, paintings, collages and drawings. From a very young age, she explored the expressive universe of drawing and painting, as well as sewing and craftwork. In her research, she not only proposes reconsidering intimate surroundings, but also their symbols and deep meanings. Throughout her career, she has created narratives based on emotional memory and her experiences as a woman and mother, producing artworks that often represent uncertainty towards the future. Her artwork reveals an intricate stitching of ideas, languages and processes centred around the universe of the female body, and motherhood in the domestic space, as well as the physical and mental constraints and the burdens and often repeated feelings of exclusion that face women, mothers and artists around the world: love and pain (and dreams and fantasies) as a fundamental part of the desire to survive into a world which remains hostile to our desires and passions. The fantastic literature of Borges, Cortazar and Garcia Marquez are a source of inspiration for her, as well as the female work of artists Rebecca Horn, Kiki Smith and Chiharu Shiota. She has participated in group exhibitions in Brazil, Portugal and Mexico. In 2019 she published the book "Lugar de comienzo y destino" (Departure and arrival place) and in 2022 she held the solo exhibition "Siempre que dormimos se acaba el mundo" (Every time we sleep, the world ends). In 2024, she was selected for the Third Artistic Residency Usina Luis Maluf, Sao Paulo, curated by Agnaldo Farias and Priscyla Gomes.
