Luciana Faria

Luciana Duarte Faria (1961) Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil

Visual artist and architect. Luciana Duarte Faria was Regina Chulan and Fernando Baril’s former student. She studied Baroque, Renaissance and Contemporary Art History at the Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Among his numerous exhibitions, highlights his most recent solo show in 2022 at the Justicia Federal Gallery, and the group exhibition "Arcanos de Marsella" (Marseilles Arcanes) in 2018 at the Alliance Française Gallery, both in Vitoria, Espirito Santo, Brazil. Her exploration includes painting and textiles, creating complex compositions that mix pictorial techniques and embroidery on canvas. Acrylic, watercolour and oil paint are combined with a variety of textiles and lines, art pieces which arise from the shapes’ surfaces, colours, textures, words and fragments of texts that have been read. The mixture of techniques and languages ​​unites the visual artist and the architect gaze, a great observer of the cities, monuments and the natural beauty of real and imaginary geographies. Urban spaces and landscapes are recurrent in her work. The artist considers contemporary embroidery as an act of resistance against colonialism, and to the prejudices that have always surrounded the figure of women. Including in artistic spaces this handcraft practice, which evokes other times and other shared knowledges in the domestic sphere, is one of the ways of recognising the value of women in the history of humankind.
